An interview with Jonathan Milligan, Owner of JobSearchMastermind.com
As an executive job recruiter and career coach, the recession meant that hoards of people who needed to find jobs fast started flocking to Jonathan Milligan for help. This left him with an interesting problem. He didn’t want to turn clients away, but simply didn’t have enough hours in the day to give one-on-one attention to each candidate. Without ever having run a website, he turned to internet marketing to get his job search secrets to more people.
“I really wanted to begin a membership site,” Milligan said. “I thought that would be a great way to get my information out there to help people during a difficult time. But I found the task to be way too overwhelming.”
One day while searching for options, he came across a forum discussion about the Micro-Continuity system.
“When I discovered the Micro-Continuity program, I knew that was the vehicle I wanted to use to help propel my program forward,” he said.
In under two weeks, he had a sales page up at JobSearchMastermind.com and ready to take orders. Two days after he launched, 10 people signed up for his continuity program and it has continued to grow steadily ever since!
The best part? Milligan has been able to help more people in their career search than ever and now that the work is done, he has more time to do what he loves most. He agreed to share some of the ups and downs he experienced in the process of building his Micro-Continuity site as well as what he’s doing to generate traffic and keep his list of subscribers growing. You can read the highlights of our interview below:

Q: When did you develop a love for coaching and decide to pursue it as a career? Why coaching job searchers in particular?
A: Growing up around sports and coaching has been a way of life for me. My father has spent his whole career in the arena of sports coaching. My passion in life is to use my creativity and coaching to support and inspire others to reach their full potential. Especially when the recession hit, I saw a need for job searchers everywhere to gain an edge over the competition. There were more people looking for work then jobs available.
Q: What made you decide to turn the job search principles you teach to your clients one-on-one into a digital course?
A: I was looking for a way to leverage some of my time. Developing a passive income stream was something that I was very interested in. I knew that I had gained a ton of information over the last several years that could be helpful to a lot of people.
Q: How did you find out about Micro-Continuity and what convinced you to give it a try?
A: I made a post in a forum looking for resources on setting up membership sites and someone directed me to Russell’s original 60 minute presentation. I could not believe that he was giving away that much information up front, but it really hooked me into the concept. I knew that day this was exactly what I was looking for.
Q: How long did it take to get JobSearchMastermind.com up and taking sales? Can you walk through the process you took?
A: I had it up and running in under a week and a half. I actually taped the first few videos while on vacation with my family. First, I emailed a five question survey to about 400 people on a mailing list. I had started a career coaching blog a few months earlier and had been collecting emails in exchange for a free report I had written. Then, from the feedback I developed an outline course (18 weeks). I then sketched an outline of what I thought were the “7 Secrets to Uncovering the Hidden Job Market” and did a recording on the computer. I started a blog post at my 20th secret and counted down, each day adding more content. I was trying to rope my audience into the material much like Russell had done for me. I wanted to give lots of value. Meanwhile, I created the squeeze page video, the number one secret video, and the first lesson. I used WordPress, Aweber, and Paypal in order to keep everything simple. Everything was ready to go pretty quickly.
Q: What were your results after your initial launch of JobSearchMastermind.com?
A: I launched it on a Saturday and had eight to 10 sales that weekend. I was really surprised since I only had about 20 to 30 visitors a day to my blog at the time. The number of members continues to grow today and it really feels good once the work has already been done.
Q: Is there anything that you know now about marketing a product that you wish you had known and implemented five years ago?
A: I think we can overestimate the short-term and underestimate the long-term when it comes to selling online. By that I mean it is so easy to get discouraged quickly and think that a product will not sell and that you are going to waste a bunch of time. This can keep you from doing anything. Had it not been for Russell, I probably would never have launched this site to begin with. Micro Continuity showed me how to just get the site up and running and then finish the rest over time. We can also underestimate the long-term and we often forget that persistence over a long period of time does pay off.
Q: What is your favorite part of internet marketing?
A: My favorite part of internet marketing is that you can touch lives anywhere with what you are passionate about. I have had students as far as Australia learn my job searching principles and it just blows my mind to think that someone like me can have that much reach. When done right and ethically, I believe that internet marketing can assist others in finding the answers and achieving the goals that they are looking for.
