Kevin Hill
Hi everyone, this is Kevin Hill. I have been writing cash-siphoning copy for Russell for the past year.
It’s kinda funny that I wrote that first sentence because I was doing something totally different a mere year ago.
Let me explain…and share a little of my background.
My first interest was science. My Dad was a botanist (he retired over a year ago) so I’ve grown up around science my entire life. So I took that interest and acted on it by becoming a biology major in college. I eventually graduated with a B.S. in Biology from Bridgewater College, Virginia in 1997.
At the time, I wanted to go to medical school but wasn’t sure I wanted to put up with sick people. So to gain more experience and figure out what I wanted to do, I decided to prolong the torture and go to school for another year to get my Medical Technology degree and become a board-certified medical technologist.
I got a job as a med-tech at the same hospital I obtained my degree (Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, Virginia) and did lab tests for doctors for about three years.
After awhile I got bored with it and decided to go to grad school. I got accepted into a Ph.D. program at Penn State University and moved there to get my degree in Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology. I worked in the lab of Dr. James G. Ferry and had a great time and learned a lot of cool stuff.
Now here’s where things get good:
In the fourth year of grad school, I started to get a change of heart. Graduating and working in a science lab for 45 years didn’t seem to appealing to me so I decided to look at other career paths.
So I went to a place called the “Library” and the “Bookstore.” I put quotes around the two sarcastically because while the bars and frat houses at Penn State were crowded, the libraries and bookstores were vacant.
I went through endless career and job books. I wanted to do something that didn’t require more school (been there, done that).
That’s when I picked up a book called “Automatic Wealth” by Michael Masterson. And that’s when I discovered copywriting.
So I decided to become a copywriters and told my committee at grad school that I was leaving with a Master’s degree. They didn’t have any problem with it (at least they didn’t say it to my face) and I left Penn State in 2005.
Once I got my Masters degree I got a job doing biodefense research at Fort Detrick, Maryland. During that time, I had a small copywriting/internet marketing business doing small jobs for clients.
My copywriting career really took off when I won a six-month copywriting apprentice with Mike Morgan and Matt Marshall. I won it by winning a copywriting contest they held in May 2005. Interestingly, the copy that won the contest was the first sales letter I had ever written.
Then Russell posted an open position for a full-time copywriting in Michel Fortin’s forum in August 2005. I wrote him back telling him how great I am and sent him a few samples. He called me back ASAP and we worked on a couple project from afar.
To make a long-story short, he hired me and invited me to move to Boise. I made the 2400 mile, four day trek in the middle of October 2005. And I’ve been here happily since.
What can you learn from my story? Well, it’s one thing: you have the power to change your life.
If you aren’t happy with your life, you have the power to improve things. If you feel the nagging that you should be doing something else, you need to follow it.
Because all it’s going to do is keep nagging you for the rest of your life. You’ll reach 60, 70, 80 years old and start to regret that you failed to take action.
Don’t live a “settle for” life.
The great football coach Bill Parcells once said, “Don’t let ‘good enough’ be good enough.”
The great copywriter Gary Bencivenga once said, “Why not the best?”
You don’t have to be pigeonholed into what the colleges and universities tell you are the best career tracks. There are tons of careers out there that don’t require extra schooling and are somewhat easy to get into if you’re a bit creative.
Anyway, sorry to go all Tony Robbins on you. I promise I’ll stop the lecture.
Other interests I have are reading, listening to all kinds of music from rock to classical, running, biking, computers, tropical fish (I hope to have a saltwater aquarium someday) and internet marketing.
The reading I enjoy is mostly self improvement (Tony Robbins, Napoleon Hill, Dale Carnegie, etc.) What’s funny is that I used to avoid the self improvement section of the bookstore like the plague…thinking it’s for people who have problems, etc. Not anymore.
Anyway, thanks for reading this. We’ve got some good stuff coming up, so pay attention to Russell’s emails.
There has never been a better time in the history of the world where one can start a business for dirt-cheap. That’s the beauty of the internet and we’re glad to give you the tools you need to make your dreams a reality.
Keep it up,
Kevin
